Are Olive Oil Sprays Good For You?
Pam cooking spray and other olive oil sprays are super convenient, but have you ever stopped to think about what else is in them?
I used these sprays for years before addressing that nagging sense that there was something “not right” about oil spraying out of a can.
So here are the problems with many of the cooking sprays.
They contain:
Soy lecithin, an additive which is a waste byproduct from soybeans.
Anti-foaming ingredients, similar to those found in paint.
Butane and propane, which are used as a propellant.
If we’re using an olive oil spray to be healthier and they have the issues listed above, we’re undoing the health benefits we’re trying to achieve!
Here’s the best solution I have found and why:
The EVO spray bottle
You pour your own olive oil into the bottle and easily spray as much or as little as you want onto your food or cooking surface.
The bottle is easy to clean and you are putting nothing but olive oil onto your food - as much or as little as desired.
There are some olive oil sprays that don’t have the problems listed above but they are few and far between and they are going to be more expensive than using your own spray bottle and they really aren’t more convenient once you’ve taken the ten seconds to pour the oil into your EVO.
Olive oil spritzed onto vegetables or fish adds great flavor and health benefits. Why not easily spray from your own bottle and know exactly what you’re getting?
Action Steps:
Read the ingredients on the cooking sprays that you’re currently using.
If you have one of the good ones that don’t contain the harmful ingredients listed above and you love it, keep using it.
If your spray does include any or all of the additives above, please consider the EVO or a healthier alternative.
I purchased two 8 oz. EVO plastic spray bottles on Amazon for approximately $20. They also have a single 16 oz stainless steel bottle for the same price.
