Getting Unstuck

My life is pretty amazing and still sometimes, I feel a bit stuck.

What I mean by that is the slightly unsettled or agitated feeling under the surface when there’s not actually anything wrong and yet, it feels like something is missing.

I feel somewhat guilty or overly entitled when I feel this way because I am so privileged and there is so much good in my life. After acknowledging these feelings, I move onto accepting that this is my reality and look for solutions to change the way I feel.

As we age, many of us get into routines. This is not a bad thing but it can get a little bit boring sometimes.

Looking for new challenges or just getting out of your routine can help move you out of the “meh” feeling you may have about life from time to time.

This doesn’t have to be anything significant, though it certainly can be.

  • It can be as simple as going out to lunch with a friend.

  • It can be as big as planning a significant vacation, and

  • It can be anything in between … a night away somewhere fun, a shopping trip, or a day out in the woods hiking or snowshoeing somewhere you’ve never been.

Routines are important because they help us live the basic parts of our lives on autopilot. Our mental and physical energy can then be more effectively focused on our work, relationships and other priorities.

Breaking out of our routines is equally important. Getting out of autopilot mode keeps our brains healthy. Engaging in new activities of any kind literally changes the neural pathways in our brains.

Most of us know that it’s essential to exercise regularly and eat healthy foods to age well.

Getting out of your daily routine from time to time is also an essential component to aging better and staying healthy.

Give it a try and have some fun with it!

Action Steps:

  1. Consider doing something new today, this week, and/or this month.

Again, it doesn’t have to be anything super big or time consuming, just something different that would be fun or interesting to you.

  2. Commit to doing at least one new, fun, interesting thing this month that gets you out of your routine and makes you happy.
