100 Things You Want to Be, Do and Have

I was sick for the past week and watched WAY TOO MUCH TV to distract myself. While mostly enjoyable in the moment, it also becomes very repetitive and boring and inevitably, I turned to something more productive.

Years ago I contemplated the idea above, which was posed by Jack Canfield in his book The Success Principles. It’s one of several pivotal books that gave me the courage to start my personal training business and leave my secure state job knowing (with 100% confidence) that I would succeed.

Yesterday I restarted my list of 100 Things I want to BE, DO and HAVE and today I challenge you to start yours. It’s an incredibly interesting process trying to come up with 100 things to put into each category.

There are many emotions that will come up and you will likely find yourself struggling to come up with 100 things. Don’t limit yourself and don’t worry about anyone else seeing your list or judging you for what you put it on.

Use it as a flow activity, meaning that whatever comes into your head gets to go on the list, no matter how ridiculous it feels or seems. Don’t judge yourself (as much as that’s possible).

When you get stuck, take a break and come back to it later. See if you can stick with the list until you come up with 100 things in every category.

There can be overlap in categories and there’s no right or wrong way to do it. JUST DO IT!

Here’s how I got started.

  • I created 3 lists: 100 Things I want to BE, 100 Things I want to DO and 100 Things I want to HAVE.

  • Then I numbered 1 through 100 on each of those lists.

  • Then I tried to come up with answers

I’m not going to lie, it’s both super interesting and super challenging. I’m far from done with my list but I’m enjoying the process and I’m committed to stick with it until I come up with 100 Things in each category.

There’s definitely overlap in my categories and I think that’s not only OK but it’s useful. Here are some examples:

I want to BE - healthy (started the list when I was sick!), fit, a good wife, successful, generous, happy, a grandmother, etc
I want to DO - exercise daily, create loving relationships, donate 10% to charity, establish a successful blog, play with friends, be authentic, live in joy, let go of fear, etc (There’s also lots of concrete physical things I want to do as well.)
I want to HAVE - good health, a four season luxury inground swimming pool in my backyard, grandchildren, loving and supportive relationships with family and friends, etc.

Action Step:

Start your list today in any way that is easy and fun for you. Don’t make it a chore or another thing that you have to get done.

Do as little or as much as feels fun and then take a break from it. Let the ideas percolate in your head as you go about your days and add to your list when you remember.

My ultimate goal with these lists is to review them daily to remind my conscious (and unconscious mind) what I really want to do with my life, rather than using TV as my autopilot mode.

Use your list in any way that benefits you and have fun with it. Who knows what will change if we dare to ACT!
