Whiting Street Reservoir
We all know walking is good for our health, but it does get boring for many of us. Going out to new places and/or connecting with a friend while walking makes everything more enjoyable.
One of my favorite spots to walk or jog, especially during the fall months, is the Whiting Reservoir. It nestles between Mount Tom State Reservation, the old Mountain Park site (where I hear there is sometimes outdoor music but haven’t been) and the Wyckoff Country Club.
It’s a beautiful 3-mile loop around the water on a relatively flat gravel service road. There are some small rolling hills but it is less than 300 feet of elevation during the entire walk. There’s also a stone covered section of path abutting the water near the water station.
While enjoying the amazing scenery, I’ve also seen a variety of wildlife, including deer (3 were right by the side of the path one morning), hawks, ducks, squirrels and plenty of birds.
The reservoir is an auxiliary water supply to the city of Holyoke so dogs are not allowed and there is no picnicking or fishing. Walking, jogging and biking during daylight hours are allowed and the reservoir is large enough that it feels like there are very few people there, even when the parking lot appears full.
There are two access points to enter. The main entrance is located off route 5 in Holyoke. You enter Mountain Park Road, turn left onto Aerator Road and then left onto Whiting Reservoir Road.
We often enter on other side, which is located on Route 141, past Mount Tom but before Wyckoff Country Club. There is parking on Old Easthampton Road, which is directly across from the entrance (below).
If you do choose this entrance, be VERY careful crossing the road. Traffic moves quickly from both directions. There’s a reason it’s not the main entrance, but it also saves us 15 minutes of driving so we patiently wait for a break in the traffic and are cautious when crossing the street.
Regardless of the entrance you chose, you will walk approximately .4 miles before getting to the 3 mile loop around the water, but the views are well well worth it.
If you’ve never been, I highly recommend it. And if you haven’t been in awhile, maybe it’s time to go back!
Action Step:
Whether you go to this spot or somewhere else, consider getting outside somewhere beautiful this week.
If you enjoy nature, get out into the woods. If you prefer a more solid paved path, maybe get out onto a bike path where you’re still immersed in nature but away from traffic.
Bring a friend with you to chat or enjoy the peaceful solitude of your own company. Just GO!
